Alkem Oy is a company established in Finland providing Sustainability Consultation services in the Nordic countries, with a holistic approach to sustainability issues, relying on scientific background and business understanding.

Sustainability

​Sustainability is a concept that was developed from the urgent need to struggle the dangers that pose  the survival and welfare of mankind through exploitative economy, leading to environmental degradation and depletion of natural resources. The need for sustainable development was generally recognized by Bruntland Comission working for UN, in 1987, where the main challenges were introduced. The desired outcome from Sustainable Development is “to meet present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”.

European Union is taking Sustainability very seriously and is advancing  legal developments towards sustainability, which is affecting most sectors in industries and services. More on EU's developments

Sustainability and business
In business context Sustainability means minimizing direct and indirect environmental burden that is necessary to provide the product or service through systems development, which can be achieved from quality improvements, energy and materials efficiency, logistical innovation, new processing methods and material choices, and by minimizing or utilizing waste and side streams through improved recycling processes, industrial ecology and new business models.

All of this should be done in an economically viable way without compromising the well-being of employees and the surrounding habitat, and by following, and remaining well within, the limits set by the regulator.

Some of the topics related to Sustainability are commonly taken into account in the industrial process design and operations, such as material and energy efficiency, but in order to capture the potential value added by enhancing sustainability, a comprehensive understanding of the system is required, so that the non-obvious interlinks, feed-back loops and connections between processes could be better understood and utilized for improving the industrial systems sustainability as a whole.
